Getting to the island and choosing a base
Vancouver Island is reached by BC Ferries from Horseshoe Bay near Vancouver to Nanaimo, or by seaplane and floatplane services. Sailing times vary by route and season, and reservations are strongly recommended for vehicles on summer weekends. The island's west coast is a long drive from the ferry terminals, so plan at least two nights in the Tofino and Ucluelet area to avoid rushing.
Tofino and Ucluelet are the two main bases. Tofino has more restaurants and surf shops, while Ucluelet is quieter and close to the Wild Pacific Trail. Both are gateways to Pacific Rim National Park Reserve, which protects long sandy beaches, rocky headlands and rainforest.
Rainforest trails and old growth
The temperate rainforest on the west coast receives a great deal of rain, which feeds mossy cedar, hemlock and Sitka spruce. Short boardwalks and loops suit most fitness levels. Cathedral Grove, located inside MacMillan Provincial Park on the route between Nanaimo and Port Alberni, has massive Douglas-fir trees and is a fine stop on the drive west.
Many trails are wet and slippery year-round. Carry a waterproof layer, wear shoes with grip, and check current trail conditions with the park office, because fallen trees and washouts close sections after storms.
Surfing, wildlife and the shoulder seasons
Chesterman Beach and Cox Bay in Tofino are popular with surfers of all levels, and lessons are widely available in the summer. Water temperatures stay cold, so a wetsuit is essential even in August. Surf conditions change with winter storms, which bring large swells from October to March.
Gray whales pass the coast in spring on their northward migration, while orcas and humpback whales are seen in other seasons. Responsible operators keep a respectful distance from marine mammals, and visitors should follow the same rules when walking on the shore. Late spring and early autumn offer the best balance of weather and fewer crowds.
