Orienting yourself in the walled city

Old Quebec City, known in French as Vieux-Quebec, sits on a rocky promontory above the Saint Lawrence River and is one of the few walled cities north of Mexico. The upper town holds the Citadelle and the Plains of Abraham area, while the lower town spreads along the waterfront at Petit-Champlain and Place Royale. Staircases and a funicular connect the two levels, so comfortable shoes matter more than any map.

Most visitors can cover the core in a weekend. Start on Saturday morning in the upper town, then walk down through the lower town in the afternoon. On Sunday, return to the walls and the Terrasse Dufferin boardwalk before the crowds build.

Saturday: landmarks and history

The Chateau Frontenac dominates the skyline and is best seen from the Dufferin Terrace at sunrise, when the light is soft and the river is calm. Walk the old city walls along the Rue des Remparts and stop at the Artillery Park National Historic Site to learn about the military history of the fortress.

Descend to Place Royale, the site of the first permanent French settlement in the region, then wander Petit-Champlain, a narrow street lined with galleries and small shops. Many boutiques close early in the evening, so schedule your browsing before dinner.

Sunday: food, bakeries and quiet streets

Quebec cuisine rewards a slower approach. Try a tourtiere, a traditional meat pie often served at the holidays, and poutine, which here is usually made with fresh cheese curds. Maple sugar treats are common in spring; in winter, look for maple taffy poured on snow. Reserve ahead for popular bistros, particularly on weekends.

For a quieter finish, walk to the Rue du Tresor, a pedestrian street of painted artworks, and then climb back to the upper town via a staircase for views over the river. If you have time, visit Saint-Jean Gate and the Ursulines Monastery museum to see the Quebec history collection in a calm setting.
